Things to do in Metairie, Louisiana

New Orleans gets all the attention when it comes to thinking of places to visit on your day off or if you were planning a vacation to Louisiana, but let’s talk about a little known spot that will soon be at the top of everyone’s must visit list in 2021, Metairie, Louisiana.

Lafreniere Park, really great around Christmas. They have a drive-thru display, or if you’re the fit type, you could walk around the place to take in the lights. Way less crowded than Celebration in the Oaks, and they even use the same kind of lights. Whenever it’s not December, this is a spacious park that is kid friendly, with plenty of walking trails and a lagoon.

Lakeside Shopping Center, they have the best cheap sunglasses here at a little kiosk in the mall. There is also a chick-fil-a here that I helped open. Great mall with a cool glass roof. Still thriving, even most malls across America are closing. Great shopping and some of the stores offer Tax Free options.

Shrine on Airline, this is the stadium where the New Orleans Zephyrs used to play, but the team is now known as the Babycakes. What is that? I’ve been here my whole life and have never heard the term. Great field if you love baseball. Awesome place to catch the superstars of the future close-up. If you can, try to catch a home game on a Friday night, that alone is worth the price of admission.

Jefferson Indoor Range, this place looks like fun. If I had a gun, this is where I would go on a weekend. Shoot guns inside, in the comfort of the AC. This shooting range is safe and is nearby surrounding areas. I wonder if people shoot AR15s here?

St Ann Catholic Church and National Shrine, local landmark and a place where many people have gotten married. This is a catholic church, so I’m sure many people have been baptized here as well. This place is a national shrine, and many people come here to pray and reflect about the things that are happening in their day and how God speaks to them, or maybe some of them are looking for god and came to this place in Metairie.

Jefferson Performing Arts Center, this place shares a parking lot with the Shrine on the airline that was mentioned above, and it is also the place where I took a motorcycle safety class from Harley davidson. They have many performances here every year, things like plays, and comedy shows, and ballet, and possibly an art exhibition. The building is very interesting and looks unlike some things in the area.

New Orleans Saints Training Facility. This is where the Saints practice. Here is where Drew Brees practices throwing the ball and Michael Thomas practices catching it. The Saints do not play their games here. It’s great that you can drive-by some days and actually see them playing outside. Sometimes they even open the facility to the public. This is the only way that you can see the Super Bowl trophy.

Camp Parapet Monument. When you drive up, it looks like a hill that someone is buried in. It probably has the last remains of some civil war general. Visitors can probably request a tour of the cemetery. Would try them around Halloween, maybe you would be able to hear some great ghost stories.

Well, that is my short list of really interesting things to do while you’re in Metairie. Skip over New Orleans next time. This place has some world-class culture to experience and some amazing restaurants too. One of them is even owned by a famous star quarterback from the New Orleans Saints. He does some pretty good cajun food.
